thalassemia (5)

(noun) - sea + -emia = inherited disorders of hemoglobin synthesis which are characterized by mild to severe anemia, and tend to occur in people of black, Mediterranean, or southeast Asian ancestry; Cooley's anemia. Often referred to in two forms, thalassemia major and thalassemia minor, the latter a milder form. Beta-thalassemia is an even more severe form. Thalassemic can be the adjective or noun form.
