A recipe for Beer Jelly
Contributed by Keiko Kashiwabuchi, and reported by Nick Miller
Beer Jelly (perhaps a Japanese invention???)
A few times a month I teach an English class for a lady in my town. Every class she always provides us with a novel treat. One week it was beer jelly . As most, if not all, of the alcohol evaporates in cooking, this dish may even be suitable for some children.
Keiko San's recipe (in English, with International measurements1) follows:
1For American measurements, go here.
Ingredients:
350 ccs beer
- 250 ccs ginger ale
- 50 gms sugar
- 15 gms gelatine
- 75 ccs water
- 4 slices of lemon
How to make:
1. Combine the gelatine in the water.
- 2. Bring the beer, ginger ale, sugar and lemon to a boil.
- 3. Dissolve the gelatine mixture in the beer.
- 4. Pour 2/3rds of the mixture into four glasses. Make sure a piece of lemon goes in each glass.
- 5. Beat or whip the other 1/3rd of the mixture, and pour slowly into the glasses.
- 6. Set them in the refrigerator to gel.
Note: I am not much of a beer fan, I much prefer wine. Suggested alternative - substitute red or white wine for the beer and change the ginger ale to Seven Up (tm) or Sprite (tm). - Nick
