GluhweinA recipe for Gluhwein
by Nick Miller
Gluhwein, a German hot wine drink
I first tasted this drink in a Gasthaus in, if memory1 serves me correct, the Altenheim area of Frankfurt aM. Note: This is NOT a drink most people like on first taste, but it DOES grown on you! My version of the recipe follows:
1OK, a very old memory at that!
Ingredients:
- One bottle of dry red wine
- The peel from one medium size orange
- 1/4 to 1/2 stick of cinnamon or several pinches cinnamon powder
- 2 or 3 whole cloves or 2 or 3 dashes powdered cloves
- a little brown (or white) sugar to taste
How to make it:
1. Place ingredients in a pot and heat. Do not allow to boil.
2. Let steep about 5 minutes.
3. Serve piping hot.
4. If boiled, the alcohol will evaporate. You can add a little neutral spirit (like vodka) to replace the lost alcohol, if desired.
